Genealogy Resources

There are extensive genealogy resources in California and we cannot list them all. Here is a list of a few of the libraries, most with some or all of the Mayflower Society 5 generation book series. Check with each library directly for hours, location, the contents of their collection and any other help they may be able to provide you.

You will find that each library has its strengths and weaknesses. While a few specialize in genealogy, and have knowledgeable staff on hand, others are libraries with a modest selection of books in their general collection. Make sure you are going to the resource that can best help you with the time period and geographic location you are researching.

Don't hesitate to ask lots of questions and, by all means, take notes continuously during your research, make photocopies of pertinent records and write down the resources of the information you gather.

A Sampling of California Mormon Family History Centers

There are several of these centers in California. They are operated by the LDS Church, and are open to anyone free of charge. The Los Angeles Center is the busiest of any outside Salt Lake. They are particularly strong on census and other microfilmed vital records from just about anywhere on earth. Films not on the shelves can be ordered for a small charge. Each center has computerized indexes for searching individuals, catalog entries and other information.
